During the 12th century, the Andalusian traveller Ibn Jubair mused about what is considered the oldest inhabited city in the world. “If Paradise be on earth,” he said, “it is, without a doubt, Damascus; but if it be in Heaven, Damascus is its counterpart on earth.” For centuries, the Syrian capital, famously known as ‘the city of jasmine,’ has inspired travellers, poets, writers, and artists with its superior architecture, narrow alleys, intimate courtyard homes, and handmade craftsmanship.
